Butlers of Bendigo

Butlers of Bendigo offers prestige Bed and Breakfast (B&B) accommodation in Historic Caradon House which has been described as Eaglehawk's finest home. It was built in 1899 by Dr Richard Jones, an Irish doctor appointed by the Borough of Eaglehawk as its Medical Officer, especially to treat the prevalent lung disease afflicting local miners.

The large, two-storey home of over 60 squares, with return verandah and upper balcony reflects the architecture of the Victorian-Edwardian era. It was designed by famous local architect firm of Vahland & Son who were responsible for many of the district's notable buildings.

In 1911 the property was sold to the Church of England which used it as a theological college for a brief time. In 1912 it was sold to James Hooper who was prominent in local mining activities and public affairs. Caradon remained in the same family for over seventy years until in 1983 it was sold by Hooper's grand-daughter to the Borough of Eaglehawk for use as Municipal offices.

Upstairs, the former Council Meeting room and the office of the Town Clerk are now the Vahland and Brassey rooms at Butlers of Bendigo.
