Bendigo Technical CollegeBendigo Victoria
The Bendigo Technical College occupies a series of buildings that were originally the Mechanics Institute and School of Mines. The former was established in 1854. The present two storey wing by Vahland and Getzchmann dates from 1864. In 1871 the Institute established a School of Mines and undertook several additions and alterations which culminated in 1890 with the three storey building and tower. It is a fine group of nineteenth century institutional buildings which reflect the civic pride of Bendigo and are fine examples of the flamboyant architectural style that epitomises this pride. Mechanics Institute features Mannerist style detailing that foreshadow Vahland work at the Bendigo Town Hall. Octagonal library is a notable interior. School of Mines wings are also notable, particularly Maccrae Street facade with its tower. |
