St Pauls Anglican Church

Bendigo Victoria

St Pauls Anglican Church St Paul`s Cathederal, Bendigo is an Interesting example of Gothic Revival in Victoria. It is unusual for a church of this scale to be erected in brick and detailing of tower pinnacles is particularly distinctive. The church is simply composed and detailed. The tower with its spiral staircase and carillon of eight bells is a notable feature and landmark of the town. Single span roof of metal and timber and the graceful nave lancet windows are also notable. The Church is a fine feature of this important historic city.

Saint Paul's Cathedral was built at the height of Bendigo's prosperity when the Bendigo goldfield was the richest in the world. The nave was first completed, in 1867, with foundations laid also for the east end. The bell tower was added in 1890, and the transept and chancel built in 1927. At that time the cathedral of the diocese was All Saints Cathedral on the other side of the valley. St Paul's was built to satisfy the liturgical needs of Bendigo Anglicans who preferred a different style of worship from that at All Saints. In 1980 the Bishop's Chair was moved to St Paul's, making it the cathedral. The two city churches were amalgamated into one parish, but eventually All Saints became a separate parish ("View Hill Fellowship") as an evangelical mission church with an informal style of worship.

St Paul`s Church, Bendigo was erected in stages. The nave dates from 1867-68, the tower from 1873 and the transepts and sanctuary from 1926-27. The architect for all stages was Robert A Love, however the final stage was supervised by Gawler and Drummond. The church is constructed of brick and has stone dressings around the window openings and on the buttresses, parapets etc. It has a simple cruciform plan with the tower centrally located at the west end
