Elizabeth Ann Luxton died on the 22nd June 1854 aged 2 years and 9 months. She was originally buried at the Sandhurst Burial Ground Bendigo. Daniel James Luxton died 30th June 1859 aged 1 year 9 months. His death was registered at Golden Square but Edwin Standford Maxwell, the Deputy Registrar, for that period made it a practice to not record t he place of burial, so we can only assume that Daniel’s remains have always been interred here and not at an earlier site. ‘Those loved babes, so young and fair, called hence by early doom. Just come to show how sweet a flower, in paradise would bloom’. James Luxton erected a second memorial in memory of his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ann Bassett, beloved daughter of Nicholas Bassett of Bridge Rule Devonshire who died 17th January 1864 age 21 years. A 3rd stone was erected in memory of James Bassett when he died on the 8th April 1867 age 47 years. His widow, Mary Ann, remained in 1871 and she is also buried in this cemetery with her second husband, Jabez carter. Porter [Church of England] Two early sandstone monuments. Thomas PorterThomas Porter died in 1887 at Sandhurst age 64 years – parents William Porter and Unknown. William was married to Rosa Hart and they had the following children: George Thomas Porter bon 1852 England, died 6th October 1855 age 2 years buried in Kangaroo Flat. Daniel Thomas born 1856 Sandhurst. Elizabeth Jane Porter born 1858 Poverty Gully Sandhurst, died 2nd December 1859 age 1 year 2 months buried in Kangaroo Flat.
Rosa born 1861 Sandhurst married 1885 Edward Augustus James. Harry Born 1866 Sandhurst. Ernest Alfred born 1869 Sandhurst. Albert born 1871 Sandhurst. Charles Porter Charles Porter died 2nd February 1881 age 50 years son of William Porter and Elizabeth Taylor. Possibly a brother to William? Edward Bissill [Church of England]Edward Bissill was born in Lincoln Shire, England in 1808 the son of Edward Bissill [sic] and Ann Thorpe. In 1850 he migrated to Australia and joined the thousands of diggers who took the dusty track to the Mount Alexander Diggings. Edward is listed in Bryce Ross’s 1853 Diggings Directory as a Storekeeper, head of Spring Gully. He had made a strike at Spring Gully and this was the beginning of the considerable fortune that he amassed over the years. In 1862 Edward purchased a house on 100 acres at Big Hill, from Judge Skinner of Bendigo. The property was later extended and with its superb view of the undulating Ravenswood countryside was considered to be one of the most attractive in the district. The 1880 Marong Shire rates list Edward as a gentleman owning pasturelands in the Parish of Lockwood with a NAV of £155. Edward married three times and lived to the ripe of age of 95 years dying on the 25th August 1903. His third wife, Phillis died 23rd October 1889 at Belvoir Park near Big Hill age 71 years; she was the daughter of Robert Kirk and Miss Smith. Their son, Walter Kirk Bissill died on the 19th February 1890 at Belvoir Park age 47 years after much suffering. Walter had married Maria Christina Stafford in 1874. James Moore [Methodist] James Moore and his brother, Thompson, were early Kangaroo Flat storekeepers. The 1880 Marong Shire rates lists James and Thompson in equal partnership with John Capper in a store at Kangaroo Flat. James also displayed an interest in Local Government, but was unsuccessful in his quest for a seat on Council. James Moore was accidentally killed on the 5th April 1881 age 62 years while he was crossing the railway line near his home to collect some goods for his store. His home, ’Millewa Hall’ still stands today. In 1855 he married Hannah Small and several of their children are buried here. George Edwin Elliot [Methodist]George Edwin Elliot operated the first brewery in the Bendigo region. His first wife, Elizabeth died on the 9th October 1865 at her residence, Devon Lodge Panton St Golden Square age 31 years. She was born in Cornwall circa 1834 the daughter of Thomas Davey and Elizabeth White. Three children were born to this union: Samuel George born 1856 Sandhurst, Frank born 1861 Sandhurst & Robert Horace born 1863 Sandhurst. George remarried on the 28th April at Christ Church St Kilda, to Florence Down the second daughter of James Down Esq of St Kilda and they had several children. William Pittaway [Methodist] William Pittaway was born 7th February 1812 in Warwickshire, England, the son of Richard Pittaway and Elizabeth Bloxham. He married Mary Mason at St. Mary’s church Warwick on the 29th March 1832. Mary had been born c1812 the daughter of William Mason and Elizabeth Halford. In March 1844 William was transported to Van Diemans Land for a period of 14 years for the theft of a church chalice. Mary followed her spouse to Tasmania with their five children and a further two were born before William was granted a conditional pardon in November 1853. By 1855 the family had settled at Kangaroo Flat where William unsuccessfully tried his hand at mining before turning to farming. In 1858 he used his skills as a sawyer to supply sleepers from his property for the railway line between Castlemaine and Bendigo. William was the first Sexton at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery and was responsible for laying out the sections. Pittaway St, Kangaroo Flat was named in his honour. Joseph Duke Ferber [Methodist]Joseph Duke Ferber, a miner, was born circa 1848 in Clare Ireland the son of Henry Ferber and Mary Duke. He was accidentally killed by flying debris following an explosion at the Collman and Tacchi Tribute in California Gully on the 27th April 1872. His father, Henry Ferber, died on the 12th May 1900 age 87 years, and mother, Mary Ferber nee Duke died 23rd September at her residence in Shamrock St Bendigo age 77 years. Alfred Hasker [Methodist]Alfred Hasker was born on the 8th July 1871 the son of John Hasker and Elizabeth Medland Stephens. Alfred died at Kyneton on the 26th October 1917 age 46 years. His wife, Annie was born 1868 the daughter of James Heneloy and Margaret Dowling. She died at Kyneton on the 30th August 1950 age 82 years. Alfred’s father, John Hasker born 24th December 1829, he died on the 15th July 1898. Johns’ widow, Elizabeth Medland whom he had married in 1856 died on the 31st November 1919 age 83 years. Their other children were: Unnamed female born 1858 Sandhurst Unnamed male born 1860 Sandhurst Rowana born 1862 Sandhurst Eleanor born Sandhurst married 1885 Edward Stevens Davenport Thomas Stephens born 1865 Sandhurst Edward Anthony born 1866 Sandhurst Gilbert born 1870 St. Kilda died 1871 age 1 year Fanny born 1874 Sandhurst Winifred born 1876 Sandhurst died 1877 George Hume born 24th January 1879 died 3rd June 1896 Alfred Gerald Bushel died 16th March 1898 age 8 months, son of Ernest Gerald and Rowana Medland, is also buried in this plot. George Moore [Methodist]George Moore born 1867 Lockwood son of Samuel Moore and Maria Jenkinson. Died 25th November 1953 age 86 years. In 1888 George married Kate Leversha. Kate was born Kent England the daughter of William Bassett and Elizabeth Blunt, she died on the 18th August 1933 age 81 years. George Leversha died 5th March 1915 age 28 years. He was the son of William Leversha and Kate Bassett, his stepbrother Percy Moore died on the 15th December 1916 age 26 years – only son of George and Kate Moore. William Sparks Petherick [Methodist]William Sparks Petherick was born c1861 in Cornwall the son of John Petherick and Elizabeth Bell. The 1884 Marong shire valuations list William as a butcher, he was owner of a dwelling and shop at Kangaroo Flat with 7 occupants, and he also owned a second shop. In 1885 William married Jane Gibson, the daughter of Thomas Gibson and Margaret Ramsay. Jane died on the 25th October 1922 age 59 years, William died on the 19th April 1941 age 80 years. Issue: William Thomas born 1885 Kangaroo Flat died 1888 age 3 years. Albert Victor born 1887 Kangaroo Flat Doris Ellen/Nellie born c1891 died 22.5.1916 age 21 years Edward John born c1901 died 11th June 1972 Dandenong age 70 years Elizabeth Jane Petherick died 29th July 1887 age 50 years mother of W.S. Petherick and daughter of Sampson Ball and Jane Bennett. Her husband, Jonas had died in 1883 age 50 years. His parents were John Petherick and Ann Square.
