Mount Alexander Fruit Gardens |
Hugh and Katie Finlay run an organic orchard in Harcourt called Mt Alexander Fruit Gardens. They grow cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, apples, apricots and raspberries, and are in the process of having the farm organically certified with NASAA.Harcourt is a fruit growing area in central Victoria with ideal growing conditions for a range of fruit. While the area is famous for its apples it also has a long history of growing cherries and stone fruit.Hugh and Katie’s vision is to supply great tasting fruit fresh off the tree direct to the customer, while managing the farm in an environmentally sound way. The farm is alongside the Mt Alexander Regional Park, and about 1/6 of the farm is currently being returned to native bush through a revegetation program. The farm is open to the public during the fruit season (November to approximately Easter) for pick-your-own, and Katie and Hugh also sell their fruit at farmers’ markets in Melbourne and country Victoria. Katie comes from a long line of orchardists. When her great grandfather was growing fruit, orchards were called “gardens”, and varieties were mixed up higgledy-piggledy, a peach next to a plum next to an apple! While Mt Alexander Fruit Gardens is run on modern orchard principles the property retains the feel of an old fashioned “garden” with small plantings of more than 80 different varieties of fruit, to ensure a steady supply of ripe fruit throughout the season. Only an hour and a half from Melbourne, Mt Alexander Fruit Gardens has become a popular tourist destination. It is also part of the new “Taste of Gold” food and wine trails that have been developed around Castlemaine.
